Lajkonik Polish Folk Ensemble performs in Arizona Balalaika’s Orchestra Annual concert at the Pima Center of Arts in Tucson The Concert is featuring music, songs and dance from Russia, Ukraine, and Poland! Musical Director Mia Bulgarin Gay has started this group as a student ensemble in the UA Russian Department way back in 1980. Since then, the AZBO has grown into a full-fledged community orchestra and a unique cultural asset for Tucson and Arizona. Orchestra is conducted by the talented Alexander Tentser. A native of Ukraine and a graduate of the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow, “Sasha” immigrated to the United States, and completed his doctorate in music at the University of Arizona. The energetic Lajkonik Polish Folk Ensemble joined AZBO for the fourth year. Under the direction of Joanna Schmit and her son Matthew Schmit, its members perform the music and dances of various cultural regions of Poland in authentic folk costumes. AZ Balalaika is always delighted to include Lajkonik’s energetic dances in their concert! It is not very often that you can see the Å»ywiec highlander dances or national oberek accompanied by the variety of dorma’s and balalaika’s. Additionally, Orchestra and Lajkonik perform together pieces that present in both cultures, that cross the borders of Ukraine and Poland, like “Korobuszka”, a popular tune also on digital device in a Tetris game. This year Lajkonik danced a Ukrainian dance Hopak choreographed by Richard Holden. Richard Holden past away last year at the age of 88, and this dance was part of the tribute to him. Richard had great admiration for Igor Moiseyev, the famous Russian choreographer and danced with his Kalinka dancers for AZBO until his 75th birthday!
