Lajkonik Polish Folk Ensemble performs in Arizona Balalaika’s Orchestra
Annual concert at the Pima Center of Arts in Tucson

The Concert is featuring music, songs and dance from Russia, Ukraine,
and
Poland! Musical Director Mia Bulgarin Gay has started this group as a
student ensemble in the UA Russian Department way back in 1980. Since
then,
the AZBO has grown into a full-fledged community orchestra and a unique
cultural asset for Tucson and Arizona.

Orchestra is conducted by the talented Alexander Tentser. A native of
Ukraine and a graduate of the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow,
“Sasha”
immigrated to the United States, and completed his doctorate in music at
the
University of Arizona.

The energetic Lajkonik Polish Folk Ensemble joined AZBO for the fourth
year.
Under the direction of Joanna Schmit and her son Matthew Schmit, its
members
perform the music and dances of various cultural regions of Poland in
authentic folk costumes. AZ Balalaika is always delighted to include
Lajkonik’s energetic dances in their concert!
It is not very often that you can see the Żywiec highlander dances or
national oberek accompanied by the variety of dorma’s and balalaika’s.
Additionally, Orchestra and Lajkonik perform together pieces that
present in
both cultures, that cross the borders of Ukraine and Poland, like
“Korobuszka”, a popular tune also on digital device in a Tetris game.

This year Lajkonik danced a Ukrainian dance Hopak choreographed by
Richard
Holden. Richard Holden past away last year at the age of 88, and this
dance
was part of the tribute to him. Richard had great admiration for Igor
Moiseyev, the famous Russian choreographer and danced with his Kalinka
dancers for AZBO until his 75th birthday!
